Community Water Fluoridation Programs

Community water fluoridation (CWF) is a process of adjusting fluoride levels in the public water supply to a level that prevents dental caries. This summary is based on a health technology assessment conducted by CADTH and includes:

  • a brief background on the history of CWF in Canada, the use of fluoride in dental caries prevention, and the controversy over CWF
  • evidence highlights from the review of CWF effects on dental caries and other health outcomes, findings from the budget impact analysis and environmental assessment, as well as ethical and implementation considerations.
