Rapid growth in medical innovation has led to many new non–drug health technologies (NDTs) being introduced into the Canadian health care market. This has occurred despite the sometimes significant costs of these technologies and the current fiscal constraints health systems across the country are facing. There have been suggestions that decisions about NDTs might be made more efficiently through a system of health technology management, which aims to improve the adoption, diffusion, use, and management of new NDTs on a system-wide basis. However, it is not entirely clear how NDTs are currently being adopted by health institutions in Canada, and what opportunities there might be to facilitate a pan-Canadian approach.

Professors Dev Menon and Tania Stafinski of the University of Alberta Health Technology and Policy Unit will present the results of their recently completed Health Canada–funded study that aimed to determine what processes Canadian jurisdictions currently employ to manage the introduction of new NDTs. The study involved interviews with key informants at health institutions across Canada to understand the main characteristics and features of the processes used for NDT decisionmaking. The findings of the draft report were validated by senior health institution staff from several provinces.

There is no fee to attend this CADTH lecture, but registration is required.
